Privacy Policy
Last updated: September 3, 2026
Dastaan (“we,” “us,” “our”) provides a service that turns spoken life stories, shared via WhatsApp, into written chapters and a finished ebook, for the storyteller’s family to read and cherish.
This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have.
Information we collect
- From the buyer/family member: name, phone number, email address, and payment information (processed by our payment provider — we do not store full card details ourselves).
- From the storyteller (elder): name, phone number, and the content of their responses — voice recordings and the text transcribed from them.
- Usage information: basic technical information such as message timestamps and delivery status, used to operate the service reliably.
How we use this information
- To send weekly prompts via WhatsApp and receive voice note responses.
- To convert voice notes into text (transcription).
- To generate follow-up questions and compile transcripts into narrative chapters, using AI processing.
- To display progress and chapters to authorized family members on the dashboard.
- To compile the final ebook at the end of the subscription period.
- To process payments and manage your subscription.
Third-party services we use
We rely on the following third-party providers to operate Dastaan. Each processes a limited, necessary set of data on our behalf:
- Meta (WhatsApp Business Platform) — to send and receive WhatsApp messages.
- OpenAI (Whisper) — to transcribe voice notes into text.
- Anthropic (Claude) — to generate follow-up questions and write chapters from transcripts.
- Supabase — to securely store account information, transcripts, and audio recordings.
- Our payment provider — to process subscription payments.
We do not sell your personal information, or the storyteller’s information, to third parties.
Who can access a storyteller’s information
Only the family member(s) who set up and are authorized on that storyteller’s account can view their dashboard, chapters, and progress. The storyteller’s voice recordings and transcripts are not made public or shared outside the authorized family account.
Data retention
We retain voice recordings, transcripts, and chapters for as long as the account is active, and for a reasonable period after subscription end to allow the family to access and download the final ebook. You may request deletion of an account’s data at any time by contacting us (see below).
Your rights
You (or the storyteller, or an authorized family member) may request to:
- Access the personal information we hold
- Correct inaccurate information (such as mistranscribed names)
- Request deletion of an account and its associated data
- Export the storyteller’s chapters/ebook
To make any of these requests, contact us at naadir@dastaanapp.in.
Security
We take reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect the information we hold, including secure storage and access controls. However, no method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Children’s privacy
Dastaan is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect information from children under 18 as account holders. Storytellers are typically older adults; if you believe a child’s information has been submitted to us in error, please contact us.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. We will update the “Last updated” date above when we do.
