Why we built Dastaan.

Every family has someone who remembers what came before — the migrations, the small decisions, the years that shaped everything after. Most of those memories live only in conversation, and conversation fades.
I built Dastaan because a life deserves more than a few photos and half-remembered stories. I wanted to give families across India a way to put it all in a book — not written about their elders, but written by them, in their own words, passed down for generations. Imagine if the first history book you ever read as a child was the life and times of your great-grandmother, written by her. Food for thought, isn’t it?
Dastaan isn’t trying to replace those conversations. It’s trying to make sure more of them actually happen, and that what gets said isn’t lost the way most spoken memories are.
Why we build it this way
Why WhatsApp
It's already on their phone, already familiar, already part of how they talk to you. No new app to learn isn't a small thing — it's the difference between something used every week and something tried once.
Why voice, not writing
Writing is a skill some people love and many people don't. Speaking is universal. The version of a story someone tells out loud is usually warmer and more detailed than anything they'd choose to write down.
Why India first
Multigenerational households, a culture built around oral storytelling, and a country where WhatsApp is already how families stay in touch — this is exactly the context Dastaan was built for.
What we hold onto
Every prompt is written for an adult with a full life behind them — never a project to be managed.
Every recording and every story belongs to your family. Nothing is sold, and nothing is shared beyond the people you invite in.
Good stories take time to tell. We'd rather take a few months and get it right than rush a life into a few pages.
We’re a small team, and we like it that way.
Every family who joins Dastaan is worked with closely — which is also why Naadir personally calls every family that gets started, rather than routing you through a generic checkout.
